Site may be oldest urban structure in the Americas

(NEWSER) - Archaeologists in Peru have unearthed one of the oldest structures in the Americas, Reuters reports. Carbon dating indicates the ceremonial plaza in Casma is 5,500 years old, scientists at the dig say. (NEWSER) - Police in Florida investigating two skulls found in a backyard say that while they definitely have a mystery on their hands, they're not looking for a killer. That's because investigators have determined that the skulls belong to a man and a 10-year-old boy who died in Peru as far back as some 800 years ago, ABC reports. The skulls, one of which had a scrap of mummified flesh still clinging to it, were uncovered by a workman installing a pool, who notified police. More»

(NEWSER) - The Roman Empire may have brought camels a long way from home to serve as its beasts of burden, archaeologists say. Researchers have found Roman-age camel bones at 22 sites across northern Europe, USA Today reports. What's more, "antique literature and iconographical sources inform us about the uses of camels in the Roman Empire," the archaeologists write. More»

6.8 Quake Rattles Peru

Quake was centered near Brazil, felt mildly in Lima

(AP) - The US Geological Survey is reporting a strong, but deep, earthquake in a northern Peruvian jungle region near Brazil. There are no immediate reports of damage or injury in the quake, which was felt mildly in the capital of Lima. The Colorado-based USGS says the quake was centered just north of the jungle city of Pucallpa and struck at 12:46pm local time. The quake occurred 90 miles underground. The deeper the quake, the less it is likely to be felt or to cause destruction. More»

Van der Sloot Jailed on Murder Charges

Peru judge orders him to prison until trial

(AP) - A Peruvian judge today ordered Joran Van der Sloot jailed on charges of first-degree murder and robbery in the killing of a 21-year-old Lima woman, determining that he acted with "ferocity and great cruelty." The judge issued the order before dawn, instructing penal authorities to place the 22-year-old Dutchman in a penitentiary pending trial. It's not clear when that trial will start. More»
