Windows Shot at Congressman's Office

Texas Rep. Gene Green's office may not have been intended target

(NEWSER) - Shots were fired at the Houston office of Rep. Gene Green yesterday morning, but there were no injuries at the Democrat's office. Police suspect it may have been a random attack. The shots, which shattered a window and damaged nearby properties, probably came from a pellet gun, police say. Green says his office isn't going to step up security because extra precautions were introduced after the Gabrielle Giffords shooting. "The staff has been briefed and trained on what to do in a problem," he tells the Houston Chronicle . "I grew up in north side Houston and never thought I couldn't protect myself." More»

Garbage Cam Airs Dirty Trash Habits

Camera phone posts pictures of garbage on Facebook, encourages recycling

(AP) - Now on Facebook: Your garbage. Or at least, the garbage of five households who signed up for a Newcastle University program that posts photos of every item dumped in one garbage can on Facebook. Hoping to raise consciousness about recycling efforts, it uses a sensor and a camera phone to snap an image each time the garbage can lid shuts. The person who does that is not photographed, and households that participate will be rated on how efficiently they recycle. So far, researchers say it's working. Non-recyclable garbage has diminished in the weeks since the program began. More»

Washington Post probe reveals leading dealers

(NEWSER) - More US guns seized in Mexican drug violence come from Texas than any other state—and more come from Houston than any other Texas city, the Washington Post finds after a year-long investigation. The probe isolated the top 12 US dealers of guns traced to Mexico, and uncovered the biggest: Bill Carter, whose Houston-area chain of stores is the source of more than 115 guns seized in the past 2 years. Of the remaining 11, seven are in Texas, which has 3,800 gun retailers, three are in Arizona, and one is in California. More»
