Humane Society footage prompts investigation in Wyoming

(NEWSER) - Wyoming officials are investigating alleged animal abuse at a pig farm after a secret video of conditions there was released. In the footage, workers are seen punching, kicking, and jumping on pigs and tossing piglets, reports CBS in Denver . Other pigs have untreated abscesses, notes the Huffington Post . The footage was recorded last month by a spy sent in by the Humane Society, which had been alerted by a whistleblower. More»

Burger King to Go Cage-Free

By 2017, all eggs, pork will come from cage-free animals

(NEWSER) - If you typically start your day with a Croissan'wich, go ahead and pat yourself on the back: You'll soon be supporting cage-free farming. Burger King made major fast-food news this morning with the announcement that it will exclusively use eggs and pork from cage-free chickens and pigs by 2017. It's the first national chain to vow to do so. The Humane Society, which pressed the move, is, unsurprisingly, thrilled. "So many tens of thousands of animals will now be in better living conditions," says a spokeswoman. More»

Feds Halt Chimp Research

NIH's temporary measure follows critical report

(NEWSER) - A new report suggests that the use of chimpanzees in health research is rarely justified, and the National Institutes of Health has taken it to heart. The organization has placed a temporary ban on using chimps in new research, "effective immediately," the Washington Post reports. A committee will examine research proposals, and current chimp-based research will be shut down if it doesn't fit new, tougher standards, the NIH director said. That likely means the end of about half the 27 current projects backed by the agency. More»

A veal-scarfing food writer offers an odd argument for passing on piglets

(NEWSER) - Josh Ozersky is a James Beard award-winning food writer, but he's no morality cop: In an essay for Time , he admits to eating our planet's wee creatures: "veal cutlets, suckling pigs, spring lambs, game hens." And he has come to terms with that. But he does want to share one compelling reason for taking a pass on animal infanticide: "gastronomic principle." Because the thing is, baby animals just don't taste very good. As animals age they develop fat and muscle; "no teensy little 4-lb. chicken is ever going to have the flavor of a fat old hen." More»
