(NEWSER) - With MTV's Video Music Awards set for Sunday (not that you'll see many videos on the channel these days), Oddee.com takes a look at some of the form’s most controversial:

• Closer, Nine Inch Nails: To go along with the explicitly sexual lyrics, this 1994 piece includes a monkey fixed to a cross, a nude woman with a crucifix mask, and a diagram of a vulva. And it’s in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.
• Jeremy, Pearl Jam: The 1992 video depicts a boy who, after being teased, heads into a classroom with a gun; MTV banned it after the 1999 Columbine massacre.

(NEWSER) - Lady Gaga lays to rest rumors that she's mixed gender and replaces them with visions of masochistic lesbian love in her latest eye-popping music video. (NEWSER) - In a move likely only to surprise anyone just out of a 25-year coma, MTV is dropping the words “Music Television” from the channel’s logo. MTV has been mostly music-video-free for some years now, giving over its airwaves to reality standbys like The Hills, The Osbournes, and its current hit, Jersey Shore. As one exec tells the Los Angeles Times of making the switch, “It felt like, ‘Why have we been so scared when the channel itself has evolved so much over the years?’” More»

Cause of death still uncertain

(NEWSER) - Ken Ober, who hosted MTV’s 1980s game show Remote Control, died Sunday at 52; a rep says the cause is still unknown, but that the actor and stand-up comic complained of a headache and flu-like symptoms Saturday. The show—at the time a relative rarity, given that the channel still played music videos—tested young contestants’ knowledge of TV reruns, with The Brady Bunch a favorite topic. More»

(NEWSER) - Crazed hip-hopper Kanye West stormed the stage last night during Taylor Swift's speech accepting her MTV award for Best Female Video to plug Beyoncé's video. Giddy country-music sweetheart Swift was mid-sentence when West, spotted earlier swigging cognac, yanked the mike from her to rant to a stunned audience. West was escorted from the building. Beyoncé, who won the award for Best Music Video at the end of the program, invited Swift on stage with her, saying: "I would like Taylor to come and have her moment." More»
