(NEWSER) - Thinking of buying a hybrid or electric vehicle to ease the pain at the pump? You may want to think again: A TrueCar.com study commissioned by the New York Times shows that, except in three cases, fuel-efficient technology is so expensive that these types of cars take years to pay off at today's gas prices—and that remains true even if gas were to hit $5 per gallon. In some cases, the average driver would take more than a decade to see savings over comparable conventional vehicles, which is a problem since the average person owns a car just six years. Most fuel-efficient cars will be more expensive to purchase and to drive for five years, at minimum. More»

GM Will Halt Volt Assembly 5 Weeks Amid Slow Sales

Move will idle 1,300 workers temporarily

(NEWSER) - The Chevy Volt's battery fires may have generated a lot of heat for General Motors, but sales of the electric car are decidedly cool, forcing GM to shut down the Volt's production lines for five weeks beginning this month, reports the Wall Street Journal . The shutdown will leave 1,300 workers jobless from March 19 to April 23. GM said it will launch a new ad campaign this month and drop its 36-month lease by $49 to $350 per month. More»

GM Ready to Fix Your Volt

Dealers will shore up protection around battery to prevent fires

(NEWSER) - Worried about battery fires in your Chevy Volt? Soon, you'll be able to bring the car to a dealer for a fix, GM says. The company will ask the owners of 8,000 of the cars to bring them to dealerships, the AP reports; technicians will then beef up the protective structure around the battery. That should prevent the casing from being punctured in crashes, which led to fires in tests last year. More»

Tsunami Survivors: Nissan Leaf Batteries

Two dozen cars destroyed, but batteries came through safely

(NEWSER) - Nissan is getting some good news from the tsunami that devastated Japan in March: Two dozen of Nissan's new Leaf were destroyed, but unlike the Chevrolet Volt , their heavily shielded batteries did not catch fire and remained intact. “Considering how they were tossed around and crushed, we think that is a very good indication of the safety performance of that vehicle,” the director of product safety tells the New York Times .
