Judge: Cheerleading Is Not a Sport

School can't count it under Title IX

(AP) - Competitive cheerleading is not an official sport that colleges can use to meet gender-equity requirements, a federal judge ruled today in ordering a Connecticut school to keep its women's volleyball team. Volleyball players sued Quinnipiac University after it announced in 2009 it would eliminate the team for budgetary reasons and replace it with a cheer squad. The school contended the squad kept it in compliance with Title IX, the 1972 federal law that mandates equal opportunities for men and women in athletics. Yzerman, Hull, Robitaille, Leetch Headed to NHL Hall

(NEWSER) - This year's NHL Hall of Fame class is a stellar one, TSN reports. All three forwards inducted—Brett Hull, Steve Yzerman, and Luc Robitaille—are among the top 10 scorers in pro hockey history. Brian Leetch, meanwhile, was a two-time winner of the Norris Trophy, awarded to the league’s top defenseman. Also to be inducted in November is Lou Lamoriello, who as general manager built three Stanley Cup winners for New Jersey. More»

Stevens, MacInnis and Francis round out elite class of '07

(NEWSER) - Mark Messier, the emotional leader of six Stanley Cup champions, was out front again yesterday—this time with an elite group entering the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Joining Messier were Scott Stevens, Al MacInnis and Ron Francis—a total of 13 Stanley Cups between them. The understated Messier called the honor "pretty humbling." More»
