(NEWSER) - The Obama administration is trying to save the spotted owl, but bailing out the endangered critter might just involve the premeditated demise of someone sitting on the family tree: The larger barred owl is a rival to the spotted owl, and is often cited as one of the major threats to the survival of the one-pound bird, which has been on the threatened species list since 1990. Despite decades of government attempts to help the spotted owl thrive—including a struggle with the logging industry—its numbers have fallen by 40% over the past 25 years. In addition to cutting down on barred owls, the new plan would designate critical habitat areas for the spotted owl, and would allow logging in order to guard against wildfire—and create jobs. More»

Authorities see more illegal pets, worry about ecosystem

(NEWSER) - Leave it to a snake to ruin paradise. Hawaiian officials are worried that a steady increase in illegal snake ownership—a 9-foot boa and a 7-foot python were captured this month after escaping—will threaten the islands' fragile ecosystem and kill off birds and flowers, reports the Associated Press . Environmental experts say Hawaii could face the same fate as Guam, which was infested with brown tree snakes after World War II and lost much of its native bird population as a result. More»

Calif. Judge Steps Up Protection for 40 Species

Feds not doing enough for wildlife in national forests, judge rules

(NEWSER) - Endangered birds, fish, frogs, butterflies, and even a species of sea lion are set to benefit from a judge's ruling that federal authorities need to do more to protect some 40 species in southern California's national forests. The judge ordered three federal agencies to "take all necessary measures" to devise and implement safeguards for the species, which include the California condor, the San Joaquin fox, and the Santa Ana sucker, reports the Los Angeles Times .
