(NEWSER) - Good news for privacy enthusiasts: The new version of Internet Explorer, out Tuesday, will include a do-not-track tool, making Microsoft’s Web browser the first major one to offer such a feature. Internet Explorer, the most widely used browser, answered the call for a do-not-track system within just three months of the FTC asking for one , the Wall Street Journal reports. Mozilla previously announced Firefox will introduce a do-not-track feature, but no word yet on whether Google and Apple will offer similar tools in their browsers. EU Demands Better Privacy for Facebook Users

New rules will call for improvements on social networking sites

(NEWSER) - The EU is demanding enhanced privacy on Facebook and other social networking sites, calling for a “right to be forgotten." The justice commissioner will unveil rules before summer demanding, among other things, that strict privacy settings be the default for users. Sites like Facebook “can't think they're exempt just because they have their servers in California or do their data processing in Bangalore,” says a spokesman. “If they're targeting EU citizens, they will have to comply with the rules.” More»

(NEWSER) - If you don’t like the idea of online companies tracking your every move , you may want to start using Firefox. Mozilla announced its Web browser will be the first to answer the FTC’s call for a do-not-track system , the Wall Street Journal reports. Just one problem: In order for the browser's do-not-track feature to actually protect your privacy, tracking companies must first agree to stop monitoring users who have enabled the feature (its default setting will be "off")—and so far, no companies have announced they would do so. (NEWSER) - Microsoft had planned to give Internet Explorer 8.0 the most advanced privacy settings in the industry, until executives swept in and made the browser more advertiser-friendly. Explorer was supposed to keep out all kinds of common tracking tools, but Microsoft opted instead to turn the feature off as a default, pushing it onto a privacy controls menu most users aren’t aware exists, the Wall Street Journal reports.
