(NEWSER) - Several hundred applicants were thrilled to read in a much-anticipated email from UCLA that they had been accepted by the prestigious university. Except they hadn't. It was all a mistake for 894 high school seniors who got the wrong notice. In fact, they're only wait-listed, they learned in a follow-up apology from the school. “We realize this is a particularly stressful time for students and their families. Web-surfing student complains of finger injury

(NEWSER) - A professor who got fed up with a student surfing the Internet instead of taking notes has been arrested and suspended for closing her laptop. Frank Rybicki, a professor of mass media at Valdosta State University, was arrested for battery after the student complained that her finger had been hurt when he closed the computer. The professor tells Inside Higher Ed that the Georgia university has told him not to discuss the incident, although he stresses that he has never harmed a student. More»

(NEWSER) - An angry university student arguing about a test question was wrestled to the floor by three burly cops called to the classroom by her professor. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student Robyn Foster, 24, told her anthropology professor before cops arrive: "I don't have to go nowhere. I paid to be here." At MIT, for instance, bloggers paid by the admissions office go about their work with no fear of censorship. (NEWSER) - Another black member of Harvard's faculty has accused the Cambridge Police Department of racism, the Boston Globe reports. S. Allen Counter, a Harvard Medical School professor, was arrested outside his home in 2006 on assault and battery charges. “I was polite, and yet police lied and said I was loud, just as they did with Professor Gates,” said Counter, who was acquitted.
