But it hasn't banned actual guns, because it's legally prohibited from doing so, the New York Times reports, in an editorial decrying Florida's NRA-approved gun laws. More»

State has narrowed gap between rich and poor students: ProPublica

(NEWSER) - Jeb Bush has made a name for himself for education reform in Florida , and a first-of-its kind analysis by ProPublica suggests he's not just blowing smoke by at least one important measure. Florida now has the highest percentage of high school students in advanced classes and, crucially, "that holds true across rich and poor districts." In other states—including Oklahoma, Maryland, and Kansas, 60 years removed from Brown vs. the Board of Education—the rich-poor gap remains wide. Generally speaking, kids in wealthy districts in those states have plenty of AP courses to choose from, and kids in high-poverty districts have few. 'Red Bull Killer' Declared Insane

Though judge says case was never about energy drink

(NEWSER) - A Florida man who smothered his elderly father to death is going to a state hospital instead of a state prison. A judge declared that Stephen Coffeen "did not understand the wrongfulness of his actions" and found him not guilty by reason of insanity today, reports the St. Petersburg Times . What normally would have been a local case drew national attention when an expert noted in court that Coffeen had been guzzling Red Bull before the killing, notes ABC .
