The National Security Agency director warns that within the next one to two years, Anonymous could launch a cyberattack that results in a limited power outage, the Wall Street Journal reports. Gen. Keith Alexander did not air his concerns in public, but in private meetings including some at the White House, sources say. Attack was response to Pentagon stance on cyberattacks: hackers

(NEWSER) - Hackers have accessed and leaked the passwords of some 180 workers at FBI-partner InfraGard, says the Atlanta-based organization. "Someone did compromise the website," said the local head of the group, a volunteer public-private partnership that shares info about threats to US physical and Internet infrastructure. Victims include members of the Army, internet security groups, and top communications firms, the AP reports. The passwords were revealed online by hackers’ group Lulz Security, which has taken credit for recent attacks on Sony, Nintendo, and PBS. More»

Volunteers aid hackers in worsening problem: research

(NEWSER) - In a sort of cyber-censorship, those who disagree with a human rights group have an increasingly easy answer: Hack its website. Hackers are increasingly targeting such groups, researchers find, using DDoS attacks to inundate a website with data in order to shut it down—sometimes for weeks. Between August 2009 and September 2010, 140 such attacks targeted more than 280 sites, and it’s likely to get worse, the Harvard researchers tell the BBC. More»
