Common for big spenders, such thank-yous are now mailed to regular shoppers too—like one reporter who bought two shirts and a jacket at Nordstrom. Online spending surge fuels modest recovery

(NEWSER) - Retail holiday sales ticked up this year for a 3.6% improvement over 2008's disastrous showing. The modestly improved overall picture included a 15.5% surge in online shopping, thanks in part to snowstorms that stranded many shoppers at home the week before Christmas, as well as an almost 6% rise at specialty electronics chains, Reuters reports. Signs of life from the consumer help stocks rebound

(NEWSER) - Positive retail reports helped get stocks back on track today after recent declines, the Wall Street Journal reports. Home Depot, Target, and Saks saw smaller-than-expected declines in quarterly profit, while discount chain TJX reported a 31% gain. The Dow rose 82.60 to close at 9,217.94. The Nasdaq gained 25.08, closing at 1,955.92, and the S&P 500 added 9.94 to settle at 989.67. More»

Filene's Basement Files for Chapter 11

Plans to sell 17 of 25 stories for $22M

(NEWSER) - Filene’s Basement filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today, the Wall Street Journal reports. The bargain clothing store has struggled in an “increasingly competitive discount retail market,” court papers said. The chain plans to sell 17 of 22 locations to real-estate investors Crown Acquisitions, though it will still hold a required auction in which it hopes to sell the rest of its assets. Crown will keep the century-old Filene’s name, it said. More»
