(NEWSER) - Pakistan officials were unaware they had forces in the area and gave the OK for US airstrikes last week that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, according to the American account of the worst friendly fire killing in the 10-year Afghanistan war, reports the Wall Street Journal . US forces in Afghanistan were pursuing Taliban militants when they came under fire; they called in airstrikes, thinking the attack was being launched by the Taliban when in fact it was the Pakistani military. ISI providing direct assistance, says secret NATO report viewed by the BBC

(NEWSER) - Big news from the BBC this morning: It says it has viewed a secret NATO report that suggests the Taliban will retake Afghanistan as soon as NATO exits the country, thanks in part to assistance it is receiving from Pakistan's ISI. The report was compiled following 27,000 interrogations of civilians and Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters, and the BBC describes it as "painful reading." Among its claims: That Pakistan is aware of the whereabouts of a number of high-ranking Taliban leaders; that some of these Taliban members live near ISI's Islamabad headquarters; and that Pakistan is actually manipulating and controlling the Taliban. "The Taliban are not Islam. The Taliban are Islamabad," said an al-Qaeda detainee, according to the report. More»

Pakistan Fires on NATO Helicopters

Two Pakistani soldiers injured in brief firefight

(NEWSER) - Pakistani ground troops and NATO helicopters exchanged fire this morning, injuring two Pakistani soldiers. Pakistan says it opened fire on the choppers when they crossed into Pakistani air space from Afghanistan, the New York Times reports. But US defense officials tell the Wall Street Journal that they have reports that the helicopters were still in Afghan airspace when the Pakistanis first attacked them, then crossed the border in response. Pakistan says it has “lodged a strong protest and demanded a flag meeting” over the incident. More»

Kunar province among Afghanistan's most violent

(NEWSER) - Six US soldiers were killed during an attack on an insurgent hideout near Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan, the Washington Post reports.
