Then their organs were put in jars and displayed for research by the doctors accused of causing their deaths under the Nazis. But yesterday they were finally buried, shutting the books on one of Vienna's darkest chapters. (NEWSER) - Libya's former oil minister, who defected during the height of his country's uprising, was found floating dead down the Danube river in Austria today. Shukri Ghanem's body showed no signs of violence, although "there would be no signs of violence if someone pushed him in," said a police spokesman. "But it's also possible that he became ill and fell into the water." The 69-year-old former prime minister was working for a Vienna-based company as a consultant, the BBC reports. More»

Shooters stormed into temple with knives, gun

(NEWSER) - A mid-afternoon shootout between members of two families at an Indian religious temple in Vienna left nine people seriously injured, Reuters reports. Authorities arrested six men who barged into the Sikh temple with knives and a gun. The men, who number among the wounded, apparently were extremists who opposed the teachings of the preacher, the BBC adds. More»

(NEWSER) - David Duke appears to have traded in burning crosses for a high-powered camera lens, reports the Telegraph, which tracked the former Ku Klux Klan honcho to a village in Austria. The onetime US presidential candidate now sells photos of birds and other wildlife he’s taken as he traipses through the country that gave the world Adolf Hitler. “There is no evidence of criminal acts,” an official said of the government's leaving Duke alone—though neighbors aren’t as accommodating. (NEWSER) - The German government today banned a neo-Nazi youth group it says ran summer camps where children were instructed in racist and National Socialist ideology, Der Spiegel reports. “Heimattreue Deutsche Jugend,” the German Youth Faithful to the Homeland, allegedly included military exercises and “racial science” classes—which discussed ways to “restore blood purity”—in its program at the camps.
