Police chief Ray Kelly has issued a new rule forbidding the city's 35,000 cops from owning any merchandise with the logo—the only exception being their uniform. The reason? Sources say Kelly made the move after seeing an officer wearing an NYPD T-shirt bearing the phrase, "Kill Them All and Let God Sort It Out." More»

Indiana cops use stun gun at day care center

(NEWSER) - File under excessive force: Indiana police used a Taser to restrain an unruly 10-year-old boy. The two officers were called to a day care center, where the boy was hitting and kicking staff. One officer "smacked the juvenile in the mouth" and the other used the stun gun on him when he lunged at a caretaker, say the cops. Both have been suspended, and the department is investigating whether they should face criminal charges, reports the Indianapolis Star . The boy didn't suffer serious injuries. More»

Officers suspended, officials 'concerned' over use of force

(NEWSER) - Four San Jose police officers videotaped as they beat and tasered a college student have been placed on administrative leave pending an official review. A grainy cell phone video shows the officers using nightsticks to repeatedly strike Phuong Ho, 20, after responding to a domestic disturbance call last month. Ho yells out and cries in pain. "I don't think you can watch that video and not be very concerned about what you've seen," said San Jose's police chief. More»

SF Cop Charged in BART Slaying

Ex-officer surrendered on suspicion of murder

(NEWSER) - The transit officer who fatally shot an unarmed man on New Year's Day, sparking San Francisco-area riots, was arrested last night in Nevada on suspicion of murder, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Sources say Johannes Mehserle, 27, had fled California after receiving death threats in the wake of Oscar Grant's death. Mehserle resigned last week rather than answer investigators’ questions.
