"Next Thursday, on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of my election to the See of Peter, I ask for your prayers, so that the Lord gives me the strength to fulfill the mission he entrusted to me." His friend, Colton Jang, turned to Reddit for help, asking if anyone on the site knew how to obtain an advance copy of the book, which isn't due out until July. More»

Poe Fans Hope Mystery Birthday Visitor Shows

After two no-show years, this could be their final vigil

(NEWSER) - Beginning on Jan. 19, 1949, a mysterious visitor marked Edgar Allan Poe's birthday by laying three red roses and a bottle of cognac on the author's Baltimore grave. But fans of the gothic scribe worry that the tradition may be resting six feet under as well: The birthday visitor last struck in 2009, on the 200th anniversary of Poe's birth. Both 2010 and 2011 passed with no sign of the "Poe toaster," who typically arrived between midnight and dawn (though imposters did attend last year, including a man who arrived in a limo). The Poe House and Museum's curator says he'll wait one final time tonight before declaring the tradition dead, reports the AP . More»

Scientist was released from hospital on Friday

(AP) - The University of Cambridge says renowned physicist Stephen Hawking isn't well enough to attend a conference held to celebrate his 70th birthday . Hawking's remarkable career is being honored today as part of a daylong conference on cosmology being hosted at the university. But the celebrity scientist, who suffers from Lou Gehrig's disease, was released from the hospital on Friday. And university Vice Chancellor Leszek Borysiewicz says Hawking's "recovery has not been fast enough for him to be able to be here." More»

Cuban leader still a quiet force on island nation

(AP) - Fidel Castro marked his 85th birthday outside of the public spotlight today, with little fanfare around the aging revolutionary icon who is rarely seen in public these days but still casts a long shadow over Cuban society. There were no announced celebrations of Castro's birthday, though the previous night two dozen musical acts from across Latin America held a concert in his honor. More»
