Uses new law to target companies behind junk emails

(NEWSER) - The Federal Trade Commission is cracking down on spammers hawking weight loss and anti-aging products via 175K junk messages, Information Week reports, as the FTC chair announced the filing of civil complaints in Australia, Canada, and the United States. (NEWSER) - A judge this week criticized juice maker POM for making deceptive claims about the health benefits of its pomegranate juice. But you wouldn't know it from POM's reaction: It took out full-page ads celebrating certain parts of the ruling, asserting that the judge agreed that POM products "provide significant health benefits." As the Washington Post sees it, the company "poked a big stick in the eye of the Federal Trade Commission" and is testing the limits of the FTC's power. More»

Yet Another Quake Hits Christchurch

4.7-magnitude quake rattles NZ city

(NEWSER) - One of the stronger of the thousands of earthquakes and aftershocks to hit Christchurch since last year's devastating 6.1 quake struck the New Zealand city today. No reports of serious injuries or damage were received after the 4.7 quake, reports the New Zealand Herald . Authorities closed the city's downtown area—now known as the "red zone"—as a precaution. Buildings in the area will be inspected over the weekend before the hundreds of workers rebuilding downtown are allowed back in. FTC: Shape-ups won't give you a body like Kim Kardashian's

(AP) - The government wants you to know that simply sporting a pair of Skechers' fitness shoes is not going to get you Kim Kardashian's curves. Skechers will pay $40 million to settle charges by the FTC that the footwear company made unfounded claims that its $100 Shape-ups shoes (endorsed by the likes of Kardashian and Brooke Burke) would help people lose weight and strengthen their butt, leg, and stomach muscles. Consumers who bought those shoes—or the company's Resistance Runner, Toners, and Tone-ups shoes—will be eligible for refunds. More»
