(AP) - A 15-year-old South Texas boy has been charged with nine counts of murder after a van he was driving crashed, killing nine of the suspected illegal immigrants packed inside. The boy appeared at a probable cause hearing today, where he was also charged with 17 counts of smuggling a person, among other things. (NEWSER) - A 14-year-old American runaway was mistakenly deported to Colombia by authorities in Texas months ago, and was only recently tracked down by a relative. The screw-up occurred when the girl gave a fake name that happened to match a 22-year-old illegal alien, and officials never bothered to confirm her identity, reports CBS News . Jakadrien Turner is African-American, didn't speak Spanish when she was shipped abroad and had no connections to Colombia. She has been working long hours as a maid in Bogata, and is now pregnant, according to the Dallas Morning News . More»

Security camera footage resulted in suspension from school

(NEWSER) - Security footage of a Texas teen kissing another boy got him suspended from school and thrown off the cheerleading squad, he tells KPLC-TV . The teen believes school officials deliberately sought to catch him in the act. "They never check cameras for anything unless something is stolen," he says. Teen Dies of Football Brain Injury

Ridge Barden collapses on field during NY game

(NEWSER) - A 16-year-old New York high school athlete collapsed during a football game with a head injury and died hours later from bleeding in the brain. Linesman Ridge Barden passed out after a "blunt-force trauma" collision during the third quarter of a game in Homer. "I don't think anyone could have ever, ever seen this coming," said the head of high school football in the region. "It's just very sad that something like this does happen. Accidents do happen." But the tragedy has underscored growing concerns about head trauma and football, particularly for young players, notes ABC News . A new law in New York now requires "concussion management teams" of sports staff and health professionals in every school district to monitor programs. More»
