Fighting flares around disputed jungle temple; no injuries reported

(NEWSER) - Thai and Cambodian troops have clashed near a disputed temple in a border area, CNN reports. The troops exchanged gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades after Cambodian forces "intruded" into Thai territory, according to a Thai general. A Cambodian government spokesman said the clashes began after Thai troops entered Cambodian territory. No injuries have been reported. More»

(NEWSER) - Cambodia has appealed to the UN to help defuse an "imminent state of war" with Thailand, the Daily Telegraph reports. Some 1,500 troops armed with heavy artillery are in a standoff at an ancient temple in a disputed frontier area. Cambodian officials are accusing Thailand of aggression and say thousands of Thai troops are massing at the border. More»

Court tries to end clashes around the Preah Vihear temple

(AP) - The UN's highest court created a demilitarized zone around a 1,000-year-old temple today on the disputed border between Cambodia and Thailand, and ordered the armed forces from both countries to withdraw. Both countries claimed they were satisfied with the ruling by the International Court of Justice, meant to end clashes that have claimed about 20 lives in the last three years and have displaced tens of thousands of people from the area around the Preah Vihear temple. 6 Shot Dead in Thai, Cambodia Border Clash

Thousands being evacuated from area

(NEWSER) - At least six soldiers were killed today when artillery and gunfire were exchanged in the latest border clash between Cambodia and Thailand. Some 5,000 civilians are being evacuated from the area near the ancient temples of Ta Krbey and Ta Moan. Ten people were killed two months ago in similar violence about 100 miles east of today's outbreak. Indonesian authorities who have been attempting to negotiate peace expressed "profound concern" over the new flare up, reports the BBC . The dispute is fueled by a conflict over the temples and who owns the surrounding land. More»
