(NEWSER) - This is going to be the first year since 1949 in which America exports more fuel than it imports, thanks to sagging demand at home and booming economies elsewhere. The US still imports around 9 million barrels of crude oil every day, but soaring exports of refined petroleum products are converting it into a net exporter, the Wall Street Journal reports. In the first nine months of this year, the US imported 689.4 million barrels and sent 753.4 million barrels of petroleum products abroad to countries including Mexico, Brazil, and the Netherlands. (USER SUBMITTED) - The price at the pump edged up 3.9 cents in the last two weeks to an average of $2.91 per gallon, according to the latest Lundberg Survey, which sampled gas prices at 2,500 filling stations across the US. That's 28 cents higher than it was last December. At this rate, says the survey's publisher, "We may easily pay three dollars per gallon or more by Christmas." More»

Crude hits highest level in a year on unauthorized trades

(NEWSER) - On Tuesday, the price of oil spiked unexpectedly to its highest level in 2009—a barrel of crude jumped from $71 to $73.50 in just one hour, for no apparent reason. Yesterday the reason became clear: a rogue broker in London with PVM, the world's largest petroleum brokerage, had conducted unauthorized trades that cost the company $10 million, reports the Financial Times. Since then, the cost of oil has eased to $66.5 a barrel, down 10% from Tuesday's peak. More»

Demand and recession drive price down

(NEWSER) - The Dow isn't the only thing plummeting. Amid falling demand, the average price of a gallon of gasoline has dropped over 35 cents in the last two weeks.
