(AP) - An Afghan soldier has killed one US Marine and wounded another before being shot to death in return fire in southern Afghanistan in the latest in a series of attacks against foreigners blamed on government forces working with coalition troops. Yesterday's attack in Helmand province was among nearly 20 this year that have raised the level of mistrust between the US-led coalition and their Afghan partners as NATO gears up to hand over security to local forces ahead of a 2014 deadline for the withdrawal of combat troops. In another sign of deteriorating security, the US has abandoned plans to open a consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif after spending $80 million on the project. More»

(NEWSER) - Some best friend. A few veterinarians and their workers are discovering dogs have made them very sick. Experts at the Centers for Disease Controls are warning of a bizarre poisoning that's occurring when dogs vomit in vet offices after ingesting pest-fighting chemicals aimed at rats, moles, and gophers. The dogs eat zinc phosphide, which is used as a rodent killer. But when it mixes with a dog's stomach acid, it produces potentially lethal phosphine gas. More»

(NEWSER) - American officials were quick to condemn the grisly photos of US soldiers posing with the body parts of dead Afghan suicide bombers that surfaced yesterday . White House Press Secretary Jay Carney called the soldiers' behavior "reprehensible," while the US Ambassador to Afghanistan called them "morally repugnant," and defense chiefs promised a full investigation, notes the Los Angeles Times , which printed two of the photos after receiving them from a serviceman concerned about a breakdown in discipline. First Western journalist visits Afghan village where 17 died

(NEWSER) - Australia's Yalda Hakim has become the first Western journalist to interview survivors of the massacre that killed 17 Afghan civilians, and their account of events is very different from the US military's. Military officials say that Robert Bales acted alone, but some survivors spoke of seeing up to 20 soldiers, MSNBC reports. One 8-year-old girl says the shooter shot her father before shooting her in the leg while other men were present, holding lights. More»
