(NEWSER) - China handed yet another dissident yet another long sentence today: Chen Xi was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being charged with "incitement to subvert state power" following the online publication of 36 essays he had written. His wife called the verdict "utterly absurd," explaining that "Chen Xi told the court it did not take into consideration the things he has written as a whole, and has interpreted his words out of context. But they have power and they don't listen." The AP reports that the sentence is very likely an attempt to quash Chen's work with a forum that organizes human rights and pro-democracy activities in the southern China. More»

China Releases Dissident Hu Jia

But human rights activist now faces house arrest

(NEWSER) - The prominent Chinese human rights activist Hu Jia has been freed from prison, after serving three-and-a-half years for "inciting subversion," reports the BBC . Hu's wife posted the news on Twitter this morning. "We are fine and happy. Need to rest for some time. Thank you everyone," the message said. With a large security presence around Hu's home in Beijing, the family is keeping quiet for now, and Hu appears to be under some form of house arrest. Hu's release follows that of artist and activist Ai Weiwei last week. More»

The invitation was one of several moves to intensify pressure on Beijing to respect human rights.
