Allegations of widespread Cincinatti-area fraud prove unfounded

(NEWSER) - An investigation into allegations of widespread voter fraud in Ohio's Hamilton County last fall found just one case, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer. A county prosecutor—and local chairman of John McCain's campaign—had demanded 600 votes be examined. The only fraudulent vote was cast by a Connecticut man who turned himself in and was fined $1,000. (NEWSER) - The South is gaining population and power at the expense of the Northeast and Midwest, according to Census Bureau estimates released yesterday. If House seats were distributed based on the estimates, which are believed to be a strong predictor of the 2010 census results, Texas would be the big winner, gaining three seats, with Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington each adding one. GOP contests provisional-ballot issues in Ohio; judge sides with party on observers in NH

(NEWSER) - The Ohio GOP is suing the state over rules concerning provisional ballots, the Toledo Blade reports, in an atmosphere tense enough that Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has been assigned extra security following death threats. The GOP amended an extant suit to challenge instructions that county boards of election could review ballots. It alleges that such counts “will inevitably result in disparate, county-by-county rules.” More»

Glitch forces celeb to fight for his right to vote

(NEWSER) - Tim Robbins’ Election Day was complicated by a glitch in the voter rolls, leaving the actor in exactly the situation he has described when urging Americans to fight for their right to vote. Workers at the Chelsea polling station where he's voted for more than 10 years couldn’t find Robbins’ name, the New York Times reports, and instead offered him a provisional ballot—the ballot he has advised voters not to accept. Cleveland polling places were hit with high turnout at the 6:30am open, but voting tapered off as the morning continued, in part thanks to the 250,000 who voted early, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. In South Florida, voters faced one- to three-hour waits, but lines were shorter than those for early voting over the past two weeks, the Miami Herald notes. More»
