(NEWSER) - A jury in New Hampshire will soon be hearing weeks of graphic testimony about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Beatrice Munyenyezi, who came to the US in 1995, is accused of lying about her role in the slaughter on her refugee and citizenship applications. Prosecutors say the 42-year-old woman was part of a Hutu extremist group, and that she personally ordered the rapes and murders of Tutsi during the genocide that killed nearly 800,000 people, AP reports. (AP) - A Dutch appeals court has convicted a Rwandan Hutu man of war crimes and sentenced him to life in prison for taking part in a massacre of Tutsis sheltering in a church during his country's 1994 genocide. The Hague Court of Appeal reversed Joseph Mpambara's acquittal by a lower court, saying his offenses were "among the most serious crimes judged by a Dutch criminal court since the Second World War." (AP) - The UN Court trying suspects of the 1994 Rwanda genocide found a female former government minister and her son guilty of war crimes today and gave both life sentences, marking the first time a woman has been convicted of genocide. Pauline Nyiramasuhuko, Rwanda's former minister for family and women affairs, and her son, Arsene Ntahobali, a former militia leader, were both found guilty of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, including rape. New Mass Rape in Congo

33 women beaten, bound

(NEWSER) - Women were restrained with ropes or beaten unconscious when some 33 of them were raped in the latest mass assault in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The coordinated New Year's Day attack, in front of some of the women's children, involved several men in each assault, said Doctors Without Borders. All the women were treated at local hospitals the following days, and two severely injured—one beaten with a rock, the other shot in the chest—were transported to a more sophisticated care facility, reports the Guardian .
