No new info in supposedly unprecedented reconstruction

(NEWSER) - The New York Times ' sweeping account of the Deepwater Horizon's final hours may be compelling storytelling, but it is not news, claims AP oil spill reporter Harry Weber . Though the Times story claims to be an account built from new disclosures that "make it possible to finally piece together the Horizon’s last hours," it's just a rehash of facts published by the AP six months ago, Weber writes. And its publication "six days before" year's end makes it seem the Times wants "to have the last word on the oil spill, perhaps as a nod to the Pulitzer board." More»

Another Daily Beast Writer Accused of Plagiarism

Beast lashes out at Gawker, demands retraction

(NEWSER) - Another Daily Beast columnist has been accused of uncredited borrowing. This time, it’s senior political columnist John Avalon, who, in his new Beast-published book Wingnuts, lifts quotes from Salon columnist Alexander Zaitchik’s reporting on Glenn Beck. Hamilton Nolan of Gawker lays out all the instances here . Basically, Avalon didn’t swipe any of Zaitchik’s own prose, but he just happened to find the exact same obscure quotes on the Stormfront.org forums, edit them the same way, and use them in the same order. New York Times Reporter Caught Plagiarizing

Business writer copied from Wall Street Journal , other sources

(NEWSER) - A New York Times business reporter has been caught cribbing text directly from the Wall Street Journal and other sources, the Times sheepishly admitted in an editor’s note today. The Times says the Journal alerted them to uncanny similarities between a Journal article published Feb. 5, and a Times DealBook blog post by Zachery Kouwe that went up two hours later. Though the Times studiously avoids the word “plagiarism” it says “several passages are repeated almost exactly.” More»

NYT Cozied Up to Spitzer Staff Amid Scandal

Emails reveal friendly exchanges between reporters, sources

(NEWSER) - The New York Times may have broken the news that Eliot Spitzer had a prostitute problem, but it was awfully nice to Spitzer’s staff amid the scandal. Gawker used New York’s open records law to snag a huge number of emails between reporters and Spitzer’s people, and discovered that the paper showed a lot of deference, sending them passages for review, and in one case even letting Spitzer’s communication director spike quotes from an interview it had already conducted.
