Richard Hamilton designed Beatles' 'White Album'

(NEWSER) - Richard Hamilton, the “Father of Pop Art” who designed the Beatles’ White Album cover, has died in Britain at 89, Billboard reports. Hamilton, who coined the term "pop art" to describe the movement that made heavy use of commercial and pop-culture images, came to prominence in the 1950s with “Just What Is It That Makes Today's Homes So Different, So Appealing?”—a collage of a couple in a house full of products. The Guardian says he was "the most influential British artist of the 20th century.” More»

Epilepsy Likely Fueled Chopin's Visions

Composer saw creatures emerging from piano

(NEWSER) - The 19th-century composer Frédéric Chopin suffered frightening hallucinations, ranging from ghosts to creatures coming out of his piano. Now, researchers believe the visions may have been prompted by temporal lobe epilepsy, the Daily Telegraph reports. The disease can cause short, detailed hallucinations, and “could easily have been overlooked by Chopin’s doctors,” researchers note in Medical Humanities . More»

Artist Has Birds Rocking at London Gallery

Public split on whether sound is avant garde or out of tune

(NEWSER) - Rock music has gone to the birds at a London art gallery—literally. An installation by French artist Celeste Boursier-Mougenot pairs 40 zebra finches with Les Paul electric guitar resting places and cymbal feeders, and invites visitors to hear the result. “What you hear could be an experimental rock band, or a band warming up,” the exhibit’s curator tells the BBC .
