Mormon leaders said they saw the ban as a “fundamental moral issue,” and contributed almost half of the $40 million collected to push Proposition 8 through; they coordinated an extensive campaign to contact voters, with church members accounting for some 90% of early door-knockers for the cause, said a strategist. Exit polls show that black voters—who turned out in record numbers—backed the ban by around 70%, the biggest margin of any ethnic group. (NEWSER) - California voters have narrowly decided to ban gay marriage, the Wall Street Journal reports. Proposition 8, which will amend the state constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a woman, currently commands a 52.1%-47.9% lead with 94.6% of precincts reporting.
