(NEWSER) - An army of helpful tweeters helped save the day when a hapless car owner nearly lost his vehicle—and his life—to a pair of carjackers in South Africa. The armed thugs forced the driver into the trunk of his Volkswagen Golf. Luckily, they didn't take his cell phone, which he used to text his girlfriend. She mobilized the Twitterverse to be on the lookout for the car. Blogger Pigspotter retweeted the plea for help to his 100,000 followers, some of whom commandeered signals from the trapped driver's own phone to track the car's movements and alert police, reports the New York Daily News . 'Kill me if you can suckers,' he writes to hometown paper

(NEWSER) - A murderer awaiting execution in North Carolina wrote a letter to his hometown newspaper ridiculing the justice system and describing his life in prison as one of "leisure." 50-year-old Danny Robbie Hembree Jr. is on death row for killing teenager Heather Catterton in 2009, reports ABC News . Hembree sent the letter to the Gaston Gazette ; in it he asks, "Is the public aware that I am a gentleman of leisure, watching color TV in the A.C., reading, taking naps at will, eating three well balanced hot meals a day?" Father failed polygraph about 2-year-old girl's disappearance: Sources

(NEWSER) - Another toddler has mysteriously disappeared, this time in Detroit. A father reported his 2-year-old daughter, Bianca Jones, was taken in an armed carjacking. Police located the car just six blocks away 30 minutes later with the engine still running, and the girl missing. The father, Deandre Lane, has failed a polygraph test, sources tell WXYZ-TV in Detroit, and is now in police custody on outstanding warrants. A local businessman has offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to Bianca's return. More»

(NEWSER) - Thanksgiving might just be PETA’s least favorite holiday , and to air their disapproval this year, activists served “baby” for Thanksgiving dinner at displays in Philadelphia and Baltimore. They set up a Thanksgiving spread on a sidewalk, the group’s media coordinator explains to the Los Angeles Times , except instead of a turkey there’s a “baby in the middle” of the table, he says. North Carolina mother is charged with assault with a deadly weapon

(NEWSER) - Two young sisters have told police that their mom intended to hurt them in a deliberate car wreck because she was "mad at daddy," according to investigators. The girls, ages 7 and 8, were treated for cuts and bruises after mom Teresa Caffrey of North Carolina drove their car into a ditch earlier this week. "The children conveyed information to my officers saying she had been arguing with their father and that she was 'mad at daddy' and that's why she wrecked the car," said the local police commander. Caffrey has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and faces additional charges of child abuse and possession of a controlled substance.
