Detroit Papers to Cut Home Delivery

Likely move will be first for major metro rags

(NEWSER) - In another sign of the dire health of the newspaper business, leading Detroit newspapers are expected to announce this week that they're eliminating home delivery 4 days a week, the Wall Street Journal reports. The Detroit Free Press and the News would be the first major metropolitan papers to take such a step, sending readers instead to the newsstand and to expanded online editions. More»

Los Angeles Times to Launch Paywall

Paper's online content won't be free after March 5

(NEWSER) - The Los Angeles Times is going behind a paywall next month, joining the ranks of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and most recently, Gannett. (The latter's hasn't gone into effect yet.) The LAT "membership program" will eventually cost $1.99 a week when combined with the Sunday paper, or $3.99 if not. Those who don't pay will get 15 free stories a month, a plan similar to that of the New York Times. Where unfair bonuses are concerned, media firms rival Wall Street: David Carr

(NEWSER) - USA Today applauded Occupy Wall Street for attacking firms that give “huge bonuses” to execs who makes terrible decisions. The paper’s right—but it’s being hypocritical. Gannett, owner of USA Today, is a champion of “bonus excess despite miserable operations,” David Carr writes in the New York Times . Gannett's recently-resigned CEO Craig Dubow oversaw the loss of 20,000 employees, and "strip-mined its newspapers in search of earnings"—yet he departed, because of health problems, not performance issues, with some $37 million in benefits.
