Running back is the first Crimson Tide player to get honor

(AP) - Mark Ingram completed the trophy case at Alabama, delivering the first Heisman to a school that boasts one of the richest histories in college football. The tough-running sophomore tailback turned tearful after winning the Heisman Trophy tonight in the closest vote in the award's 75-year history. (NEWSER) - Five finalists will compete for the coveted Heisman Trophy this year, the AP notes, the largest ballot for college football's crowning achievement since 2004. They are:

• Mark Ingram, Alabama: The running back appears to be the favorite as his team is No. 1 in the standings. If he pulls it off, it would be the first Heisman for Alabama.
• Toby Gerhart, Stanford: The running back, who has more yards and touchdowns than any other player this year, is close on Ingram's heels.
