(NEWSER) - An Oregon church is suing a woman who called the place a "cult" in a Google review. The defamation suit is seeking $500,000 after Julie Anne Smith allegedly accused the "creepy" church of "indoctrination," reports the Raw Story . "Don’t waste your precious lives and relationships being held emotionally/spiritually captive by this so-called church," Smith wrote, alleging that the pastor knew of a sex offender in the church but had done nothing to protect kids. Convicted Murderer Won't Get New Trial...

Despite dramatic change in cause of toddler's death

(AP) - The medical examiner changed her opinion on the cause of a toddler's death, but the Supreme Court won't consider giving the man convicted in the child's death a new trial. The high court today refused, without comment, to hear an appeal from Neil Hampton Robbins, convicted in the death of 17-month-old Tristen Skye Rivet, who died on May 12, 1998. At the trial, Dr. Patricia Moore testified that Tristen's death was a homicide caused by asphyxia. But Moore later changed her opinion and said the cause of death was undetermined. More»

NYT Editor Target of Anthrax Hoax

White powder sent in swastika envelope

(NEWSER) - Good things rarely come in envelopes bearing a skull and bones symbol and a swastika sticker, the husband of New York Times assistant managing editor Susan Chira discovered on Wednesday. The envelope he opened, which had a Manhattan post office box as the return address, contained a plastic bag labeled "weaponized Anthrax" and containing white powder, reports the Huffington Post . Cops and federal agents determined that the powder was harmless. The incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime. More»

Texan arrested after car broke down

(NEWSER) - First she got a ticket, then she was arrested, and as a sheriff's deputy drove her to prison, she claims she was subjected to Rush Limbaugh's "derogatory comments about black people" on the radio. All this and more prompted a Texas woman to sue the deputy and the county for a laundry list of items, including false imprisonment, assault and battery, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, the Houston Chronicle reports.
