(AP) - New fires involving the lithium-ion batteries in General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Volt have prompted an investigation to assess the risk of fire in the electric car after a serious crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says. One Volt battery pack that was being closely monitored following a government crash test caught fire Thursday; another recently crash-tested battery emitted smoke and sparks, according to a statement from the safety administration. GM Teams With LG on Electric Cars

Electronics maker to do more than just provide batteries

(NEWSER) - Hot on the heels of news of the Ford-Toyota deal , we’ve got word of a far stranger electric car pact: General Motors has agreed to a deal to co-develop cars with LG Group, the Wall Street Journal reports. The consumer electronics company already makes the battery for the Chevy Volt, but now it’ll apparently be expanding its role beyond that. The companies didn’t elaborate on any specific plans, or indicate when their first jointly produced cars might hit showrooms. More»

Department of Energy grant will create new line at Maryland plant

(NEWSER) - General Motors is planning to invest $246 million—$105 million of which will come from a Department of Energy grant—in a new electric motor production line. The project is expected to create roughly 200 jobs, and represents a big bet on the future of electric cars. GM officials likened the importance of the technology to that of engines in gasoline cars. GM Announces Plug-In Hybrid SUV

Buick model could get twice the mileage of similar automobiles

(NEWSER) - General Motors’ Buick brand will churn out the first plug-in hybrid SUV by a leading automaker, the company said today. “Buick will get our first plug-in hybrid, which will put the brand front and center in the advanced technology game,” said a GM exec. The company says the crossover SUV, available in 2011, could get twice the mileage of similarly-sized autos, the Detroit Free Press reports. More»
