Auto Rescue Lifts Stocks

(NEWSER) - Stocks slid at the open, after Timothy Geithner pushed back the announcement of his much-anticipated bank rescue plan until tomorrow. The Dow dropped 40 points, while the Nasdaq and S&P barely budged, falling 0.6% and 0.4% each. But financial stocks actually rose, with Bank of America, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley all up. (NEWSER) - Stocks continued their holiday nap today, opening only modestly higher despite an expansion of the auto bailout. The Dow rose 57 points, while the Nasdaq and S&P each rose 0.6%. Madoff doesn't help either

(NEWSER) - Stocks went sky-diving this morning in the wake of the Senate’s scuttling of the auto bailout and the massive fraud case against a former NASDAQ chairman. The Dow dropped 200 points, accompanied by 2.5% and 1.8% drops in the S&P and Nasdaq, respectively. The auto news rippled through the market, sending US Steel down 4% and parts maker Lear more than 27%, the Wall Street Journal reports. More»

S&P 500, Nasdaq follow suit

S&P, Nasdaq follow suit

(NEWSER) - The Dow plunged more than 300 points at the open today, and dropped almost 500 before retreating, as investors worried about Europe and the global economy. It's currently hovering just below 11,000, according to Marketwatch . The S&P 500 also dropped 48 points to 1,146, while the Nasdaq fell 115 points to 2,397. The Wall Street Journal notes that, in particular, Bank of America and HP shares tumbled. More»
