Fitzgerald urges judge to rule against release pending appeal

(NEWSER) - The prosecutor in the Scooter Libby case wants the judge to send the vice president's ex-chief of staff to prison sooner rather than later. Arguing that the chance of an appeals court overturning the conviction is "at best, remote," Patrick Fitzgerald filed documents today calling for Libby's 30-month sentence to begin no more than 60 days after a hearing Thursday. (NEWSER) - The vice president's ex-chief of staff will spend 30 months in prison and pay a $250,000 fine for lying to federal investigators about his role in blowing a CIA agent's cover. (NEWSER) - Scooter Libby is about to be sentenced, but the government prosecutor and lawyers for the VP's ex-chief of staff aren't letting up, the Washington Post's Dan Froomkin blogs today. The jousting continued in a court filing last week in which, Froomkin posits, "the special counsel evidently felt obliged to put Libby's crime in context. And that context is Dick Cheney." More»

New docs show former veep thought ill of Plame husband's Nigeria trip

(NEWSER) - Dick Cheney's memory may have been a little iffy about the Valerie Plame leak, but Politico reports that the former veep left no room for doubt about his opinion of her husband's trip to Niger to investigate an Iraqi purchase of plutonium. "It was amateur hour out at the CIA," Cheney told a federal prosecutor in a 2004 interview released Friday. More»
