Joseph of Nazareth, aka Joseph von Nazareth because he tweets in German, has taken to the Twitterverse to broadcast his tiny family's tribulations this Christmas, reports Der Spiegel . "Do you have any carpenter's work in Jerusalem? If so, I'm the man for the job," he recently tweeted . "Please note, that currently, I can only take orders in Nazareth and the surrounding area." The anonymous tweeter—a self-described third generation carpenter from Nazareth—started posting in Joseph's voice the first day of December and plans to continue through the Big Day. Disciples thought image was 'living double of Jesus,' he says

(NEWSER) - As Christians prepare to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, a Cambridge professor is claiming that a piece of cloth lies at the heart of their religion. Art historian Thomas de Wesselow has devoted much of his career to studying the Shroud of Turin. He believes it is the shroud of Jesus, and that the vivid image of a man on the burial cloth convinced Christ's disciples that he was still alive, the Telegraph reports. "They saw the image on the cloth as the living double of Jesus," he explains. “Back then, images had a psychological presence. They were seen as part of a separate plane of existence, as having a life of their own." More»

Faithful flock to Church of the Nativity

(NEWSER) - There wasn't any room at the inns today as thousands of faithful thronged the streets of Bethlehem to worship at Christ's biblical birthplace. Visitors snapped photos at the 50-foot-tall Christmas tree at Manger Square and received blessings from Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the head of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, as he walked in a traditional procession from Jerusalem through Bethlehem. The big event is midnight mass at the Church of the Nativity, built over what's believed to be the spot where Jesus was born. Some 90,000 tourists are expected to visit the Holy Land over the holidays. More»

Billboard there to spark conversation, church says

(NEWSER) - A church in Auckland, New Zealand, has irked traditionalists with a billboard showing a shocked Virgin Mary looking at a pregnancy test. St. Matthew-in-the-City Church says the portrait was intended to “spark thought and conversation in the community." Christmas is "about a real pregnancy, a real mother and a real child," the church's vicar says. "Mary was young, unmarried and poor. She was certainly not the first woman in this situation or the last." More»
