(NEWSER) - More US guns seized in Mexican drug violence come from Texas than any other state—and more come from Houston than any other Texas city, the Washington Post finds after a year-long investigation. The probe isolated the top 12 US dealers of guns traced to Mexico, and uncovered the biggest: Bill Carter, whose Houston-area chain of stores is the source of more than 115 guns seized in the past 2 years. (NEWSER) - The woman accused of shooting a young mother to death and snatching her 3-day-old boy is a Texas nurse who told police she was planning to "adopt" the baby as her own after suffering a miscarriage, reports AP . Verna McClain, 30, confessed to killing 28-year-old Kala Golden outside a pediatrician's office in Houston and will face capital murder charges. More»

Tornado Blasts Texas

Twister damages rural homes near San Antonio

(NEWSER) - A tornado touched down near San Antonio yesterday, damaging roughly 50 homes and sweeping others away entirely, the National Weather Service has confirmed. The twister touched down about 25 miles southwest of the city and moved toward it, but never reached it, instead damaging mostly rural property, Reuters reports. The accompanying storm did leave roughly 23,000 San Antonio homes without power, however, and lightning strikes set at least two homes on fire. More»

Texas to Spring Break Students: Stay Out of Mexico

Mexico tried to talk state out of third warning

(NEWSER) - The state of Texas is again warning students to say out of Mexico for spring break. "The Mexican government has made great strides battling the cartels," said the state's Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw. "However, drug cartel violence and other criminal activity represent a significant safety threat, even in resort areas." The number of Americans murdered in Mexico jumped to 120 last year, from 35 in 2007. "Many crimes against Americans in Mexico go unpunished," said McCraw. The Texas warning—its third in three years—is another blow to the economy in Mexico, where tourism is the second-largest industry, reports Reuters . Americans account for some 60% of tourists. More»
