US report tags Iran as chief state sponsor of terrorism

(NEWSER) - Last year saw deaths from terrorism drop for the third year in a row, although the number of terror attacks was up slightly, according to the State Department's annual report on global terrorism . Some 13,186 people were killed in 11,500 terror attacks in 72 countries, down from 22,719 deaths in 2007. The decline in deaths is attributed to a fall in mass-casualty attacks and a rise in attacks that claimed no casualties, ABC News reports. Tough new air security crackdown begins today

(NEWSER) - In the toughest new airline security rules in history, all US-bound passengers from 14 nations considered state sponsors of terrorism or "countries of interest" will be patted down, and their carry-on baggage will be searched. The new rules will apply beginning today to travelers from Afghanistan, Algeria, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, MSNBC reports. (NEWSER) - The US is crawling with Hezbollah agents, many of whom have been trained as terrorists, Rep. Peter King said in a CNN appearance today. "The American intelligence community … believes we are very much at risk for an attack by Iranian operatives, which would be Hezbollah," King said, according to Politico . "It really is the ‘A’ team of international terrorism—far more sophisticated than al-Qaeda." More»

US: Iran May Be Cozying Up to al-Qaeda

Country may have offered detained militants freedom

(NEWSER) - Iran appears to have eased restrictions on senior al-Qaeda militants who have been under house arrest, offering to let them leave the country, US officials say. The approximately five men were detained nine years ago, and are members of al-Qaeda's management council—one is a former adviser to Osama bin Laden; another is an explosives expert. The officials also say Iran may be providing al-Qaeda with material support, including money, transportation, and organizational assistance. The news is, unsurprisingly, stoking concerns in Washington over what some fear are growing links between Iran and al-Qaeda, the Wall Street Journal reports. More»

US: Iran lets militants run fundraising network from within its borders

(NEWSER) - The US has officially accused Iran of having a deal with al-Qaeda that lets militants route supplies, cash, and fighters through Iran to Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Wall Street Journal reports. The Treasury Department has sanctioned six al-Qaeda operatives who it suspects run a fundraising network that uses Iran-based operatives to reel in money from wealthy donors who live in the region's oil-rich countries. US officials say Iran, like the terrorist group, wants to push US forces out of the Middle East and Central Asia. More»
