A spirit told him he would find gold, but no such luck

(NEWSER) - An Indiana man had to be rescued from a giant hole in his own back yard. The 25-year-old says he was digging for gold because a spirit told him he would discover treasure, reports WSBT . After three days, he struck water instead and became hopelessly trapped up to his knees in the sludge. His father, who was helping him, made it out of the crevasse and alerted authorities. Archeologists find remains of lyre in Scottish cave

(NEWSER) - Turns out even ancient Europeans liked subtle and complex music. Archeologists have found part of a 2,300-year-old lyre—the oldest instrument ever discovered in western Europe—inside a Scottish cave, the Daily Mail reports. The broken and burnt piece of wood "pushes the history of complex music back more than a thousand years, into our darkest pre-history," music archeologist Graeme Lawson tells the BBC . "And not only the history of music but more specifically of song and poetry, because that's what such instruments were very often used for." More»

(NEWSER) - Forget what you learned in school about the first Americans: A new theory is turning archeological assumptions upside down. A pair of experts on ancient history assert that the first Europeans arrived in the Mid-Atlantic region 20,000 years ago, during the Stone Age—rejecting the standard theory that North America was unpopulated until Siberians arrived 15,000 years ago.
