Program would boost deportation, though at steep costs

(NEWSER) - The US government is ramping up a program to identify illegal immigrants being held in local jails for non-immigration crimes, and flag them for deportation, reports the Washington Post. Currently operating in 48 counties, the program will be screening every local jail by 2012. (NEWSER) - It’s not every day an American citizen gets charged with pretending to be an illegal immigrant, but that’s what happened to one Utah 27-year-old this week. The man was originally arrested for dealing drugs in February 2010, the Salt Lake Tribune reports. He told the judge he was an illegal immigrant from Mexico named Saul Quiroz. (NEWSER) - Barack Obama’s campaign will return donations made by his aunt, who was outed yesterday as an illegal resident in the US, the Washington Post reports. Zeituni Onyango, the half-sister of the candidate’s late father, lives in a Boston public housing unit and gave $265 to her nephew’s campaign. Rules bar foreign nationals from donating to American presidential campaigns. More»

(NEWSER) - Barack Obama's Kenyan aunt has been living illegally in the US since 2004, the AP reports. Zeituni Onyango—affectionately referred to as "Auntie Zeituni" in the candidate's memoir—has been living in a Boston housing estate for the last 4 years, despite having been ordered to leave the US after her application for asylum was rejected. Onyango's actions are a non-criminal violation of immigration law. More»

34-year-old man dies of cancer

(NEWSER) - Hiu Lui “Jason” Ng was a New York computer engineer trying to get his green card when immigration officials arrested him last year, the New York Times reports. Last week he died of undiagnosed cancer after months of neglect in immigration detention centers. Ng complained of chronic back pain, and eventually became too weak to walk or stand, but officials refused to give him a wheelchair or medical examination, his lawyers say. More»
