(NEWSER) - President Obama is pushing hard for the extension of the payroll tax cut, and has two weapons to aid him in his quest: a doomsday clock and a calculator. The countdown clock has been set up in the White House press room and appears, conveniently, behind the podium. The video screen display counts down the remaining days of the year, reports USA Today . "What this clock dramatizes is that there isn't a lot of time and that Congress needs to act and do the right thing," explains Jay Carney. (AP) - President Obama wants voters to get involved in the debate over extending the reduced payroll tax, and he's asking them to tell members of Congress to keep the cut in place. "Let your members of Congress know where you stand," Obama said today in his weekly radio and Internet address. "Tell them not to vote to raise taxes on working Americans during the holidays. Tell them to put country before party. Put money back in the pockets of working Americans. Pass these tax cuts." More»

Geithner Blew Off Obama's Order to Dissolve Citigroup

New book says Obama's team routinely undermined him

(NEWSER) - In March 2009, in the throes of the financial crisis, Barack Obama told Tim Geithner to focus on a proposal to dissolve Citigroup—but the Treasury Secretary ignored him and never developed a plan, according to former Wall Street Journal reporter Ron Suskind’s new book Confidence Men. In the book, which was obtained early by the AP and the New York Times , Suskind writes that Obama’s “authority was being systematically undermined or hedged by his seasoned advisers.” More»
