(NEWSER) - Yes, it is the 21st century … but apparently not in Pike County, Kentucky, where a small Baptist church has barred interracial couples from becoming members or participating in certain church activities. It all started back in June, when Stella Harville, who is white, brought fiancé Ticha Chikuni, who is black, to Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, where they performed a song. (NEWSER) - No time for church, but still want to observe Ash Wednesday today? A Cincinnati church has the answer for its harried faithful: A drive-thru. The Mt. Healthy Methodist Church will today offer up ashes and a blessing in its parking lot between 5 and 6pm, reports the Enquirer , and you don't even have to get out of your car. "We have two entrances and one exit,” says a reverend. “So we should be able to do this fairly quickly.” But you can't get fries with that, and the ash isn't totally free: Participants must take a church brochure and a Lent booklet. “It’s a drive-thru,” says the reverend. “Not a drive-by.” More»

At least 30 detained, church member says

(AP) - Chinese police detained at least 30 Christians belonging to an unregistered Beijing church as the congregation gathered today for an Easter service, a church member says. Police stopped the worshippers from the unregistered Shouwang church as they gathered near a public plaza in the city's university district, then bused them to a local police station. The AP saw about a dozen people taken away but a church member says at least 30 were detained. More»

New translation cuts down on the 'he's'

(NEWSER) - God is still the Father in the latest version of the world's most popular Bible, but conservative Christians aren't happy with gender-neutral language elsewhere in the 2011 New International Version Bible. The new translation—which Biblical scholars say is a more accurate interpretation of the original Greek and Hebrew—uses "brothers and sisters" in place of "brothers" and tries to avoid using "he" or 'him" as the default reference to an unspecified person, replacing it with "they," AP reports.
