No specific threat, says general in detailing January plans

(NEWSER) - The Pentagon plans a dramatic expansion of the military presence in Washington to coincide with Barack Obama’s Jan. 20 inauguration, the Los Angeles Times reports. About 4,000 National Guardsmen and 7,500 active-duty troops will augment local police and security forces, while air patrols will be increased. No threats have been reported, but “it is prudent to plan for the possibility,” the commanding general said. More»

'East Coast Rapist' Suspect Attempts Suicide in Jail

Aaron Thomas suffers only slight injuries, returned to jail later

(NEWSER) - The man accused of being the East Coast Rapist tried to hang himself in his jail cell yesterday, but suffered only minor injuries, reports the Hartford Courant . Aaron Thomas, who was arrested Friday for a series of rapes dating back to 1997 , was taken to a local hospital, but returned to jail later in the day. The newspaper also reports that Thomas was wanted by the IRS for failing to pay more than $11,000 in taxes. More»
