(NEWSER) - The early reviews are in from Barack Obama’s inauguration address, and the news is positive. Here’s what the critics are saying:

• At the National Review, Michael Knox Beran thought the speech was a “home run.” It predictably had “a few lines at which a conservative would cavil,” but impressed with its somber tone and deference to the founding fathers.
• Jacob Heilbrun of the Huffington Post saw something else in the references to Washington and company. “He promised a new American revolution,” with a fresh generation renewing America’s promise.

(NEWSER) - Barack Obama has a reputation as a great orator, so most are expecting a soaring and eloquent inaugural address today. But Obama’s speech can’t just be pretty, writes Tom Brune in Newsday. “He has work to do.” Obama must:

• Define the moment: Specifically, define it as the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
• Give hope (but not too much): Obama must restore confidence in the economy, but without raising unrealistic expectations.

President chides Republicans on payroll taxes

(AP) - President Obama continued his onslaught on congressional Republicans today, saying that Congress needs to extend a payroll tax cut in light of an economic recovery that's "still fragile" and middle class families who need the money. In a statement given from the White House this afternoon, Obama urged Republicans to "keep your word to the American people" on not raising taxes. Obama has been seeking an extension and expansion to the payroll tax cut that will expire at the end of the year. More»
