(NEWSER) - The world's first permanent war crimes tribunal has recorded its first verdict, finding Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga guilty of recruiting child soldiers as young as 11 and sending them into battle. The International Criminal Court will sentence Lubanga, who led a militia during an ethnic conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo early last decade, at a later date, the BBC reports. (NEWSER) - Congolese politician Jean-Pierre Bemba went on trial in The Hague today for war crimes, becoming the highest-ranking official to face the International Criminal Court. He's accused of leading a militia that raped, murdered, and tortured victims in the Central African Republic in 2002 and 2003, the New York Times reports. Bemba's 2008 arrest shocked the Congo, which largely regarded him as untouchable. Backed by a big defense team, he denies the charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. More»

Charles Taylor Sentenced to 50 Years

Former Liberian president expected to appeal

(NEWSER) - Charles Taylor is going away for 50 years. The former Liberian president, 64, was sentenced to a half-century in a British prison today, as international war crimes court judges blamed him for "some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history." But Taylor will likely remain in The Hague for months as his lawyers appeal his 11 convictions on charges of aiding and abetting the rebels during a decade-long war that killed more than 50,000. As Trial Begins, Mladic Taunts Survivors

Sarcastically claps, draws finger across throat

(NEWSER) - The war crimes trial for Ratko Mladic opened today in the Hague, and the Bosnian Serb general once again made no attempt to appear sympathetic. He gave a thumbs-up and slowly clapped his hands sarcastically as the trial began, waving and smirking at the rows of survivors and relatives of victims in the Hague courtroom. At one point, he even drew a finger across his throat. The Guardian claims the motion was his odd way of calling for a bathroom break, but Reuters calls it a "gesture of defiance" that was made while Mladic stared at a Muslim woman. The judge called for a recess to end the "inappropriate interactions." More»

Charles Taylor Guilty of War Crimes

International court rules against former Liberian president

(AP) - In a historic ruling, an international court convicted former Liberian President Charles Taylor on Thursday of aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity for supporting notoriously brutal rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone in return for blood diamonds. Taylor is the first head of state convicted by an international court since the post-World War II Nuremberg military tribunal. Presiding Judge Richard Lussick said the 64-year-old warlord-turned-president provided arms, ammunition, communications equipment, and planning to rebels responsible for countless atrocities in the 1991-2002 Sierra Leone civil war.
