Caterpillar to Slash 20K Jobs

(NEWSER) - FedEx net income plunged 75% in the third quarter, the company announced today, a bad sign for economists who consider the shipping giant a bellwether. FedEx also announced plans to cut $1 billion in costs, though it didn’t detail how many job cuts that might entail. The company has already lowered salaries, with CEO Fred Smith taking a 20% pay cut. (NEWSER) - Microsoft surprised the street today by releasing its earnings early, and they weren’t pretty. The software giant’s revenues inched up only 2%, below earlier guidance, and its net income dropped 11%. More alarming, the company said it was slashing 5,000 jobs, starting with 1,400 today, which amounts to 5.5% of its workforce. “We are not immune to the effects of the economy,” said Steve Ballmer. (AP) - Sony is slashing 8,000 jobs, or 4%of its global work force, aiming to cut costs by $1.1 billion a year as a global downturn and stronger yen batters profits at the Japanese electronics maker. Sony, which has 185,000 employees worldwide, said today it will complete the layoffs by the end of March 2010. Some 80% of Sony's sales come from overseas. More»

(NEWSER) - Citigroup plans to slash more than 50,000 jobs, roughly 14% of its workforce, the company announced today, in an effort to shed expenses during the economic downturn. The cuts are in addition to the 23,000 heads that have already rolled this year, Bloomberg reports. Citi stock fell 19% last week, and is down 68% on the year. The nation's fourth-largest bank says the moves will forward its goal of cutting expenses by 20% in 2009. More»

Though first-quarter profit beat expectations, a growth story is absent

(NEWSER) - The fact that 66% of American companies beat their first-quarter earnings expectations is good, writes Henry Blodget in Clusterstock, but not as good as it looks. A closer examination of the data shows that while profits increased, revenues did not, and “you can’t fire your way to prosperity.” Earnings show companies adjusting to recession—not pulling out of it. “Until companies start surprising on revenue, all this particular ‘green shoot’ shows is that companies are reacting quickly to the recession.” More»
