(Newser) – Hackers have illegally accessed Monster.com and stolen personal details from an uncertain number of its 75 million users, Bloomberg reports. (NEWSER) - Google is challenging hackers to find holes in its Chrome browser—with a sweetener. The company is offering a total of $1 million in prizes to people who can find bugs or vulnerabilities in Chrome at next week's CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver, reports Wired . Hackers stand to win $60,000 for a "full Chrome exploit" using only bugs found in Chrome, $40,000 for a "partial exploit" using a Chrome bug plus a bug elsewhere, or a $20,000 "consolation reward" for a Chrome hack using bugs found in Flash or Windows. Hackers Hit Internet Giant VeriSign

Firm is responsible for delivering people to more than half of all websites

(NEWSER) - Hackers managed to break into the servers of a crucial web company responsible for delivering users to more than half the websites in the world. VeriSign doesn't believe the attackers infiltrated its Domain Name System network—which is responsible for directing traffic to .com, .net, and .gov addresses on the Internet—but it can't rule it out. The attacks occurred in 2010, but only came to light today, when Reuters spotted them in an October SEC filing. More»

Jobs Site Monster Cutting 400 ... Jobs

That's 7% of positions worldwide

(NEWSER) - It's a layoff announcement with a sad, ironic twist: Monster Worldwide, which runs the online recruitment site and makes job-search software, is itself slashing 400 jobs, reports Reuters . That amounts to 7% of full-time staff. "The progress we saw in the fourth quarter was much slower than what we saw earlier in the year," says CEO Sal Iannuzzi. The company gets half its revenue from within the US, where it's facing increased competition from CareerBuilder and the expanding LinkedIn, notes MarketWatch . More»

Millions of Printers in Danger of Being Hacked

Researchers call it a major vulnerability: MSNBC

(NEWSER) - Even if your computer is as secure as you can make it, you may still be offering hackers entry to your network—through your printer. Columbia University researchers warn that millions of printers belonging to consumers, businesses, and government agencies could be vulnerable to attack. Among other dangers, hackers may be able to give printers remote instructions that would eventually cause them to catch fire, use hijacked printers to retrieve Social Security numbers or other sensitive information, or even gain access to an entire network, MSNBC reports in an extensive look at the dangers. Hackers Hit US Defense Contractors

It's not clear what they got

(NEWSER) - This can't be good: Hackers breached the security networks of top US defense contractors, reports Reuters . The story has no details on what, if anything, the hackers got, and points out that any highly classified work would likely be out of reach on a closed government network. But it's possible that some details on future weapons systems as well as weapons in use today in Iraq and Afghanistan were compromised. Lockheed Martin got hit for sure, and it looks like General Dynamic, Boeing, Northrup Grumman, and Raytheon were exposed by the same vulnerability. More»
