(NEWSER) - The true number remains elusive, but one demographer estimates that more than 9 million Americans—roughly the population of New Jersey—are gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Gary Gates averaged the results of five US surveys conducted between 2004 and 2009 to find that 3.5% of Americans identify themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, he says in a report released today. Prenatal Pill May Reduce Lesbianism

Ambiguous genitalia treatment raises alarms

(NEWSER) - A prenatal pill designed to prevent ambiguous genitalia in newborns may end up reducing lesbianism, triggering complaints from critics that the treatment is nothing more than medical engineering to manipulate sexual orientation. A few dozen pregnancies each year in the US result in babies with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which causes an accumulation of male hormones. Hormone treatment in utero can reduce the likelihood that a female will be born with masculinized genitalia, but the pill also appears to reduce the chances that a baby girl will be homosexual and increases traditionally feminine behavioral traits, reports the Los Angeles Times . 'Conversion therapy' is dangerous, bill's sponsor says

(NEWSER) - Psychotherapists who claim they can "cure" gay teenagers may soon be out of business in California. A bill before the state Senate would ban so-called "conversion therapy" for minors and require adults to sign a release form stating that the counseling is ineffective and possibly dangerous, reports AP . Such treatments can "cause extreme depression and guilt" that sometimes lead to suicide, says the bill's sponsor, Democratic Sen. Ted Lieu. More»

Jennifer Tyrrell launches petition for policy shift

(NEWSER) - Earlier this month, a Cub Scout den leader and mom was removed from her post because she's gay. Now she has launched a campaign to change the organization's policy. When Jennifer Tyrrell became a leader in Bridgeport, Ohio, she was aware of the Boy Scouts' rules against openly-homosexual members, but a Cubmaster told her it wouldn't be an issue at the local level. "He said they would stand hand in hand with us and stand behind us all the way," she tells MSNBC . More»
