(NEWSER) - Nearly 1 in every 4 homeowners owes more on their mortgages than their homes are worth, a serious obstacle to any kind of housing recovery. According to a report from First American CoreLogic, a real estate information company, nearly 10.7 million households are “underwater,” with 5.3 million of those owing at least 20% more than their home’s value. Well-to-do buyers weren't immune to wacky loans, and they're coming due

(NEWSER) - The country's most expensive homes are now making up a larger segment of foreclosures in the most recent spike of mortgage defaults. An analysis of recent data shows that 30% of June foreclosures involved homes valued in the top third based on location; that’s up from just 16% at the beginning of the crisis. “The slope of that curve in recent months is much sharper than it was recently,” an economist tells the Wall Street Journal. (NEWSER) - Foreclosure numbers were up big again in July, rising 9% from June’s figures and a whopping 93% from a year ago, an unwelcome sign for already reeling credit markets. New 'mortgage to lease' program kicks off in test markets

(NEWSER) - Falling behind on your Bank of America mortgage? Well, what would you say if the bank offered to take your house, but let you rent it for a while? That's the idea behind a new "Mortgage to Lease" pilot program that BofA is rolling out in select markets in Arizona, Nevada, and New York. Participants will hand the title of their home over to the bank, which will forgive their outstanding debt and lease it to them for up to three years at or below market rates, the AP explains. More»
