Ebook publishing program expands lending library

(NEWSER) - Amazon is seeing big results from a new ebook-lending program. Its new KDP Select program, which allows independent writers and publishers to cash in on borrowed books, saw 300,000 borrowed titles last month. The program, allotted $500,000 last month, provided authors with $1.70 per borrow, with the top 10 KDP Select writers scoring some $70,000, TechCrunch reports. This month, the fund has grown to $700,000, the company says, thanks to the Kindle Lending Library's success. More»

Amazon Opens Lending Library for Kindle

But it's only for those who belong to its Prime program

(NEWSER) - Starting today, Kindle users who are Amazon Prime subscribers—and no one else—will have access to Amazon’s new ebook lending library. The library won’t be available to those using Kindle apps on other devices, and it’s opening with a fairly small selection of books: just over 5,000, the Wall Street Journal reports. (NEWSER) - Kindle users will be able to go to the virtual library soon. A new feature scheduled to launch later this year will allow anyone with a Kindle (or a phone with the Kindle app) to download e-books from their local libraries for free for a limited span of time, USA Today reports. Library e-books have been available to users of Barnes & Noble's Nook and Sony's Reader, and the Kindle Library Lending Feature brings Amazon in line with those rivals, notes the Financial Times . Study: 'epidemic of loneliness' among 18-34

(NEWSER) - Loneliness plagues the young more than the old, a new study suggests. In a survey of 2,256 Brits, about 60% of people 18 to 34 said they often or sometimes felt lonely, compared to only 35% of those over 55, reports the BBC . The findings, a psychiatrist tells the Guardian , challenge "our stereotype of the older person, home alone." More women reported feeling lonely, noted the report, which also found that the proportion of people living alone doubled between 1972 and 2008. More»

But though some find it 'dangerously alluring,' most 'love' gadget

(NEWSER) - It's “dangerously alluring,” but the iPhone makes most Stanford students so giddy that they don’t really care. About a third of respondents in a recent study said they worried about becoming addicted to the gadget. But the torrid affair is far from over—roughly three-quarters said that it makes them happier and that they'd fallen asleep in bed with their "little friend." Some 58% “love it,” which could explain why 41% say losing it would be a “tragedy.” More»
