Researchers now able to distinguish new, old sources of methane

(NEWSER) - There are huge quantities of methane locked in ice sheets around the world, threatening to speed up climate change as they get released in melting ice. But determining which methane is the ancient kind and which is much younger and hails from, say, plant life that has decayed in lakes hasn't been easy—until now. The BBC reports that researchers have been able to ID the former by logging the ratio of different isotopes of carbon found in the methane molecules. Scientists were then able to test some of the 150,000 sites in Alaska and Greenland where methane is seeping into the atmosphere, and found that some are indeed releasing ancient methane. More»

Man Hurls Shoe at Breivik, Hits Lawyer

Brother was victim of Norway attacks

(NEWSER) - An onlooker at the trial of Anders Behring Breivik launched a shoe at the admitted killer today, shouting, "Go to hell, go to hell, you killed my brother." The throw marked the first public interruption of the trial, Reuters notes, and it was met with applause, tears, and cries of "bravo." The shoe missed Breivik, instead hitting one of his lawyers; the incident briefly halted the hearing. More»

Edvard Munch's Factory Murals Head for Sale

Dining-hall paintings show lighter side of Scream painter

(NEWSER) - The painter of The Scream was also an interior decorator of sorts: Edvard Munch painted a set of murals long displayed in the dining hall of an Oslo factory. Now, that canteen—currently owned by Kraft Foods—could be on its way to a sale, paintings included. Officials plan to keep an eye on the potential sale since the canteen is regarded as a national treasure; Kraft says it will make sure the paintings enter safe hands, the BBC reports. More»

40K Norwegians Sing Song Breivik Can't Stand

(NEWSER) - Anders Behring Breivik hates the Norwegian song "Children of the Rainbow"; he says it's a Marxist anthem. So 40,000 Norwegians, inspired by an Internet campaign, gathered in rainy Oslo today to belt out the tune near the courthouse where Breivik is being tried, AFP reports. The brightly-clad protesters carried Norwegian flags and roses symbolizing peace in the wake of Breivik's massacre. Among the singers were culture ministers from several Nordic countries, as well as schoolkids and the songwriter himself, Lillebjoern Nilsen, who directed the performance. More»
